About Thunderbird Liquors
Thunderbird Liquors, “Norman’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll Liquor Store”, is a family-owned and operated retail package store proudly established the day after Christmas in 1986. Our original location was the corner of Classen Blvd and Lindsey Street, just a block from the Duck Pond at the University of Oklahoma campus.
This original location was the site of an abandoned gasoline service station built by Phillips Petroleum Company in the early 1960’s. The building’s design was reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s architectural style which was utilized extensively throughout the United States by Phillips as it turned it’s attention to modernizing it’s brand worldwide.
The remodeling of the old Christianson Phillips 66 station to house Thunderbird Liquors was begun in mid-October 1986 and was completed less than two months later. Opening December 25, 1986, it was the eighth liquor store in Norman. The cost of the remodel was less than the cost of a new Mini Cooper in 2012.
For twenty-two years, Thunderbird Liquors served its loyal customers and neighbors from that location. The store survived hardships including a total intersection shutdown for 11 months in the early ‘90’s when the intersection of Classen and Lindsey was upgraded from two to four lanes.
In 2008 Thunderbird Liquors moved into it’s present location at 12th Avenue SE and East Lindsey. This new location has nearly twice the retail space. Weighing in at 2500 square feet, we have been able to double our beer and spirit inventory, while tripling our wine inventory. Our new, boutique-style interior has lots of room for new inventory. Customer requests are vital and instrumental in helping us customize our selections while building our ever-expanding inventory for our loyal clientele who live in our neighborhood far and wide.
It is with pride that we boast of a nearly 100% open rate in the 26 years that we have been in business. That is to say, we have opened our doors Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 9 PM, having never closed early or missed a single day…closing only during the Ice Storm of 2007 when our power was out for four days.
As we enter our 27th year, great customer service in a friendly and comfortable atmosphere remains our number one priority. We look forward to seeing you soon.
